A Fine Line explores why less than 7% of head chefs and restaurant owners are women, when traditionally, women have always held the central role in the kitchen.

As part of the event, The Spokesman Review’s Northwest Passages Stage will host fascinating women who are major creators on the culinary scene:

Spokane’s own Deborah DiBernardo, founder of Roast House Coffee, a coffee entrepreneur who wants to change the world, one cup of coffee at a time.  Deb has just returned from a trip to Rwanda… a force to be reckoned with, she uses her power for good…for Damn Good Coffee. Deb will talk about her trip and her career as she has prioritized specializing in coffee farmed organically by women around the world.

Mareya Ibrahim known as “The Fit Foodie,” is a TV chef, holistic nutrition coach, author and award-winning entrepreneur and inventor. She is the author of the new book, “Eat Like You Give a Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive” and “The Clean Eating Handbook: 31 Essential Rules to Health, Wellness and a Fabulously Fit Life.”  Chef Mareya writes the column, “The Fit Foodie” which appears in Edible Orange County Magazine. She is also the host of the “Recipes for Your Best Life” Podcast and was a featured chef on the Food Network, eHow.com, Livestrong.com and Recipe Rehab.

Filmmaker Joanne James, turned the camera on her own mother as she produced, directed and wrote “A FINE LINE” a documentary that explores why less than 7% of head chefs and restaurant owners are women, when traditionally, women have always held the central role in the kitchen. Interviews with world reknowned chefs, interspersed with behind the scenes footage of restaurant industry insiders, and brings to light the stresses and discrimination women face in culinary careers.  

Anita Lo, a master Michelin star chef, Iron Chef America Champion and Top Chef Master contender, Lo was also the first female chef of a state dinner at The White House under the Obama Administration. She closed her restaurant anissa, to pursue her next adventure…which started with the cookbook “SOLO: A Modern Cookbook for the Party of One” and has led her to Spokane to fish. Seriously, fishing is one of Lo’s favorite pastimes!  Lo will also speak at Crave about A FINE LINE, as well as later that evening at The Bing.
