The goal of New Horizons groups is to create an entry point to group music-making for adult beginners and a comfortable re-entry point for adults who played music in school and would like to resume after long years of building careers and raising children. You will find that the people who join New Horizons groups are from varied backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common - their love of music. No matter what your circumstances, the New Horizons concept of making music provides a non-intimidating environment for you to begin or to resume your musical journey. It offers you the chance to play the instrument you have always dreamed about and to progress at your own rate.

The first New Horizons program was started at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester by Dr. Roy Ernst in 1991. His philosophy was that anyone can learn to play music at a level that will bring a sense of accomplishment and the ability to perform in a group. There are now over 204 groups internationally. To learn more about New Horizons go to: http://www.newhorizonsmusic.org/nhima.html

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM BRINGS HIS SOLO ACT TO THE BING CROSBY THEATRE

SBL Entertainment presents legendary guitarist, singer/songwriter/producer, Grammy® Award winner and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame member LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM live at the Bing Crosby Theatre Monday, May 21st. Buckingham’s performance at The Bing is part of a special three week West Coast tour in support of his latest release Seeds We Sow.

This intimate-one-man show showcases Buckingham’s distinctive guitar picking style and instantly recognizable voice in his usual awe inspiring form, captivating the audience with songs from his recent album, favorites from previous solo albums, and a variety of Fleetwood Mac classics.

"As I've grown as an artist, I've gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar,” says Lindsey. “Over time it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is what will be largely represented in the new show. I've been thinking of doing this kind of tour for a while, and am quite excited to be doing something new, something outside my comfort zone."

LOCAL FEMALE ARTISTS HOST BENEFIT SHOW FOR TRANSITIONS

Local Females Sing to Support Low-Income And Homeless Women in Transition For 2nd Year At Bing Crosby Theater On Thursday, May 24, 7-9 p.m. Tickets $10.

For the second year, Transitions is partnering with passionate, local female musicians to raise funds and awareness for homeless and low-income women through Women Transitioning Women, a benefit concert at the Bing Crosby Theater on Thursday, May 24, from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the door or on Ticketswest.com.

Women Transitioning Women will feature five local singer/songwriter groups performing all original music to support homeless and struggling women and children in the Spokane community. Last year WTWraised more than $1,000 for their fellow females—the cost of providing job training and bus passes for 10 women for a month. The musicians want to double the impact this year, hoping that last year’s success set the stage for bigger community investment on May 24.

Inspired by her passion for helping women, local musician Kari Marguerite developed this partnership saying that, “As a woman, I feel comfortable knowing that Transitions respects and values women and understands our needs so well. As a musician, it's just great to be able to use my art to help a great cause.” She goes on to say, “Transitions can and does help women change the arc of their lives for the better.”

The lineup is diverse, featuring several genres including folk, indie, acoustic, pop and jazz. Artists and available links to music samples follow:

Angela Marie Project www.angelamarieproject.com/, Suhanna Hamilton, Liz Rognes www.lizrognes.com, Kari Marguerite and the 76 www.karimarguerite.com, Wonder Wonder www.1031kcda.com/player/?mid=21490978, and Nicole Lewis http://www.myspace.com/nicolelewismusic.

Since 1995, Transitions has been helping women, children, and families rebuild their lives broken by abuse, addiction, mental illness, poverty, and homelessness. Transitions maintains five programs: Women's Hearth, Miryam's House, Transitional Living Center, EduCare and New Leaf Bakery & Cafe. For more information about how you can join the fight to end poverty and homelessness for women and children in Spokane through Transitions, call 509-328-6702, email award@help4women.org, or visit our website at help4women.org.

With 23 national TV appearances, 47 years of standup comedy experience and 14,346 diapers changed, these guys know comedy...and fatherhood. The Stand-up Dads is the brainchild of Dan St. Paul (A&E, VH-1, Comedy Central). At the prestigious Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, CA St. Paul had been opening for acts such as Natalie Cole, Vince Gill, and Smokey Robinson. He became such a crowd favorite the Villa called upon Dan and his funniest friend of 20 years for a full evening’s worth of comedy in “two Stand-Up Dads.”

Milt Abel (San Francisco Comedy Competition finalist) joins Dan in examining the grist of fatherhood and suburban life: from child birth to adolescence (My bumper sticker reads ‘My son’s just getting by at Hillsdale High) it’s all meat to be skewered. Both are fathers who pride themselves on performing clever material about family life that has audiences laughing across America.
The North American Hazardous Materials Management Association - Northwest Chapter presents Mark Dorfman from the Biomimicry Guild

Biomimicry is an innovative method that seeks sustainable solutions by emulating nature's time-tested patterns and strategies, e.g., a solar cell inspired by a leaf. The goal is to create products, processes, and policies - new ways of living - that are well-adapted to life on earth over the long haul.

In discussing biomimicry, Mark Dorfman highlights nature’s logical processes in creating sustainable life-friendly chemistries (strong fibers, effective adhesives, brilliant colors, leak-proof packages, self-cleaning surfaces, enticing flavors and fragrances, antibacterials, etc.) in a way that does not deplete resources, pollute the environment, or pose risks to organisms and their offspring. Mr. Dorfman presents examples of nature’s elegant and sophisticated chemistry genius, and examples of biomimetic products in this lecture.

We encourage anybody with interests in science, engineering, sustainability (or who just wants to know about the future) to join us at the beautifully remodeled, historic Bing Crosby Theater in Downtown Spokane for this thought provoking lecture. Seating is open to the public.

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans almost five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia,
Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy’s unique style – he calls it simply “finger style” – is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that – and more – on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans.

Emmanuel’s unusual talent and life are common lore in Australia. Born into a musical family, Tommy and his older brother Phil were considered child prodigies. Tommy got his first guitar at age 4 and was taught by his mother. He learned by ear, with no formal instruction, and has never read music. By the age of 6, he was already working as a professional musician in the family band, variously named The Emmanuel Quartet, The Midget Surfaries and The Trailblazers. Tommy played rhythm guitar and his older brother Phil played lead, along with their brother Chris on drums and sister Virginia on slide guitar. The Emmanuel siblings earned the family’s sole income for several years. Tommy doesn’t remember such responsibility as a hardship: “I’ve spent all my life from the age of four playing music and entertaining people. I never wanted to do anything else.” By age 10, Emmanuel had played his way across Australia.

In 1962, Tommy heard Nashville guitarist Chet Atkins’ music for the first time and was riveted by the complexity of Atkins’ solo sound. He spent hours trying to figure out the “fingerpicking” style and gobbled up each of the American star’s albums as they came out. Shortly after his father’s death of a heart attack in 1966, Tommy even wrote Chet a letter and, to his surprise, the famous artist and producer wrote him back. Chet would grow to become Tommy’s mentor and primary influence, but it would be another 15 years before the two would finally meet in person.

After his father died, the Emmanuel family was approached by Australian country music star Buddy Williams, who took them on the road until they were forced by the Australian child welfare department to stop traveling. The children were then sent to a regular school. During these years, Tommy was playing in The Trailblazers on weekends. He also taught guitar and made numerous television appearances in musical competitions. Emmanuel’s first brush with fame came when The Trailblazers won two televised talent contests and were able to produce an album. Leaving school and home in his early teens, Tommy embraced big city life in Sydney in order to pursue his career as a professional guitarist. By the 70′s, he was playing in clubs all over the city and soon found himself in high demand as a session player and sideman known for his versatility and easy-going personality. During the mid 70s through the early 80s, Emmanuel played on recordings for Air Supply, Men at Work and dozens of other popular bands and artists, as well as thousands of commercial ‘jingles.’ He became known as one of the best modern guitarists in Australia. Some of his most notable appearances were on the Air Supply hit singles Lost in Love, All Out of Love, Every Woman in the World, and Now and Forever. In 1985 Emmanuel joined one of the decade’s biggest Australian rock bands, Dragon, and recorded the platinum-selling album Dreams of Ordinary Men. In 1987, Dragon toured with Tina Turner on her ‘Break Every Rule’ tour. As a songwriter (co-writing with 1960s Australian star Steve Kipner), his compositions have been recorded by Olivia Newton-John, Al Jarreau, and Sheena Easton. It is for his successful solo career, however, that Emmanuel is best known.

In 1980 Emmanuel made a trip to the United States and finally met and got to play with his hero, Chet Atkins, in Nashville. From that magical moment
forward, the Tennessee master guitarist and producer took the twenty-something Australian ace under his wing and began introducing him to other guitar legends. Tommy speaks of his mentor with the love and gratitude of a son and Atkins’ influences are evident throughout his music and personal philosophy. Emmanuel’s technical precision, his virtuosic improvisations and his unusually broad repertoire – which encompasses not only country and bluegrass, but pop, jazz, blues, gospel, even classical, flamenco, and aboriginal styles – bespeak Chet Atkins’ legacy.

Emmanuel got his solo instrumental career off the ground with the release of the gentle and textural Up from Down Under album in 1988. In the 90′s his efforts blossomed and began to be recognized and rewarded by the Australian music industry and media. Sales of his albums set records that have yet to be broken.

His versatility has taken Emmanuel from international Jazz Festivals to shows with the Sydney Philharmonic, The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and performances for the Masai people in remote areas of Kenya. Tommy’s dream of recording with Chet Atkins came true in 1996 when the pair made an album titled The Day the Finger Pickers Took Over the World, for which Emmanuel received his first Grammy award nomination.

Tommy was well-known in Australia, Asia, and Europe long before his presence was felt in the U.S. However, in 1997 his album Midnight Drive was in the top five for 16 weeks, which made him the “most added artist” on the NAC radio charts that year. In Nashville in 1999, Tommy was honored by his mentor, Chet Atkins with the title of “Certified Guitar Player” for his contribution to fingerstyle guitar, a rare distinction shared by only three other people in the world (Jerry Reed, Steve Wariner and John Knowles). It was a crowning moment for Emmanuel and a title the self-proclaimed “humble, uneducated, country kid” from Down Under takes very seriously.

After Tommy’s appearance with his brother Phil in the Closing Ceremonies of the Sydney Olympic Games and his debut at the famous Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, in late 2000, Americans wanted to know who this mysterious Australian guitar virtuoso was. In 2001, Emmanuel released his first solo-acoustic album, ONLY, and in 2002 it debuted in the U.S.

Emmanuel’s popularity in the US has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years, aided by a non-stop touring schedule and increasing exposure in the media. 2005 kicked off a stream of US honors and awards. Tommy was inducted into the National Thumbpickers’ Hall of Fame in Muhlenberg, KY
(the only non-American ever to be selected) and awarded with Thumbpicker of the Year and Album of the Year by the group, as well. He played Carnegie
Hall for Les Paul’s 90th birthday Tribute Concert. His The Mystery album earned a Grammy nomination in 2006 for Best Country Instrumental for ‘Gameshow Rag/Cannonball Rag’. In 2008, Guitar Player Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine named him Best Acoustic Guitarist and Gold Medalist – Fingerstyle category in the Readers’ Choice and Players’ Choice Awards, respectively.

His newest solo album and DVD Center Stage were produced in 2008 based on the popularity of Emmanuel’s episde of a PBS series called Sierra Center Stage filmed live at the famous Sierra Nevada Brewery venue in Sierra Nevada, CA. Tommy’s Center Stage video has been featured on PBS stations around the country during 2009, drawing ever-larger sellout crowds to his live shows. Tommy was also honored with Guitar Player Magazine’s most prestigious annual Guitar Legend award in 2009, as well as being named Thumbpicker of the Year for the second time. Most recently, Guitar Player’s 2010 Readers Choice awards named him Best Acoustic Guitarist for the second time!

In all, Emmanuel’s catalogue includes 20 musical recordings running the gamut of solos, duets, ensembles, cover tunes, originals, both electric and
acoustic guitar. He has made 3 live performance DVDs, 3 additional instructional DVDs, and regularly teaches master classes on the road. At 54, performing live is more important to him than ever and he tours constantly, playing over 300 concerts a year for the last five years. Guitar players of all levels come to his shows to watch the magic hands of the ‘guitar Wizard of Oz,’ but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. His live shows are known for their humor, passion, and infectious joy. The power of his charismatic showmanship will be an enduring part of Emmanuel’s legacy. Tommy Emmanuel’s message is pure love for the music and his delight in sharing it with the world, one audience at a time.

John Mayall was born 29th of November 1933 in Macclesfield, an English town near the industrial hub of Manchester--a far cry at that time from the black American blues culture we are familiar with today. The eldest of three from humble working class origins, and in the shadow of WWII, this skinny English lad grew up listening to his guitarist father's extensive jazz record collection and felt drawn to the blues. Strongly influenced by such greats as Leadbelly, Albert Ammons, Pinetop Smith, and Eddie Lang, from the age of 13 he taught himself to play and develop his own style with the aid of a neighbor's piano, borrowed guitars, and secondhand harmonicas. John made his move to London where he soon secured enough club work to be able to turn professional under the name John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. After a couple of years and a constant turnover of musicians, he met his soulmate in Eric Clapton, who had quit the Yardbirds in favor of playing the blues. This historic union culminated in the first hit album for the Bluesbreakers and resulted in worldwide legendary status. After Clapton and Jack Bruce left the band to form Cream, a succession of great musicians defined their artistic roots under John's leadership, and he became as well known for discovering new talent as for his hard-hitting interpretations of the fierce Chicago-style blues he'd grown up listening to. As sidemen left to form their own groups, others took their places. Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood became Fleetwood Mac. Andy Fraser formed Free, and Mick Taylor joined the Rolling Stones. As Eric Clapton has stated, "John Mayall has actually run an incredibly great school for musicians." Attracted by the West Coast climate and culture, John then made his permanent move from England to Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles and began forming bands with American musicians. Throughout the 70's, John became further revered for his many jazz/rock/blues innovations featuring such notable performers as Blue Mitchell, Red Holloway, Larry Taylor, and Harvey Mandel. He also backed blues greats John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson on their first English club tours. Steadily releasing albums and touring for the last 40 years, John Mayall has become an institution of the blues. The current version of The Bluesbreakers features Rocky Athas, Greg Rzab, Jay Davenport and Tom Canning.
